    Other Koh Phangan Beach
    Ao Chao Pao Beach
From the main port town of Thong Sala, about a 10 minute drive along the west coast of Koh Phangan you will arrive at the wonderful beach of Ao Chao Phao.

Ao Chao Phao, with its small coves and bays, is great for exploring and swimming. There are extensive coral reefs offshore for snorkeling, and an inland lake behind the cape called Lam Son for swimming and relaxing. There are many bungalow facilities along the beach.

Chao Phao Beach has beautiful sunset views and softly curved bay that is the image of paradise. The sand is white and fine and the sea shelf is steeper before the reef, thus it is possible to swim whatever the tidal conditions. The reef is about 100 metres from the beach and once crossed the rich coral and vibrant sea life are an attraction for divers and snorkellers.

The beach along this gently curving bay isn't quite as pretty as some further north with a relatively narrow strip of sand, but it's still a very good choice for swimming and sunbathing and is generally a very relaxed place. The water gets deep faster here than at most nearby beaches, so the swimming is better regardless of the tide. The laid-back and mostly inexpensive lodging here attracts a good mix of people and a lot of repeat customers.

Old style family-run bungalow setups are popular among backpackers, but some fancier and better-equipped options have recently developed here as well. The food is a particular draw card, with a couple of great bungalow restaurants, including wonderful fresh seafood, plenty of vegetarian options, and delicious authentic Thai food at good prices. The deeper water and coral reef about 100 metres offshore beyond which lie a lovely variety of corals and sea life make this a popular spot for divers and snorkellers as well.

    Ao Nai Wok Bay
Ao Nai Wok is the long bay that extends north from the main port town of Thong Sala after the main pier. Its northeastern edge is within easy walking distance from town and yet far enough away to offer the seclusion necessary, most consider it a natural wonder. A number of resorts populate the beach and rocks start to break up the coastline. The bay is fairly shallow, thus swimming is best in high tidal season. There is a reef about 80 metres out where the sea shelf drops allowing for some reasonable snorkeling conditions.

If you are planning a special vacation to Koh Phangan, you should be aware that Ao Nai Wok is Koh Phangan's ultimate kayaking adventure. Ao Nai Wok is located on the southwest shore of Koh Phangan along the bay of Ao Nai Wok.

If you enjoy diving or prefer to snorkel, Ao Nai Wok has what you desire, as there is a pronounced coral reef that lays some eighty meters offshore. Ao Nai Wok is situated on a shallow shelf so if you intend to swim, you should be aware that the best times for this activity are between the months of December and March. If you wish to paddle about in the remaining months, you should coincide your excursions at Ao Nai Wok with the right tide.

Whether you are traveling alone or with a group, Ao Nai Wok provides a perfect venue for daytime adventures when on the beach or in the bottle blue waters. There are kayaks for hire at the Tranquil Resort at a cheap rate. If you are the active type but don't feel like getting wet, Ao Nai Wok is also great for sandy strolls to explore the rock outcrops and verdant jungle flora that borders the beach. Remember, no trip to Koh Phangan is complete without a day at Ao Nai Wok, Koh Phangan's ultimate kayaking adventure!

Aow Bang Charu Beach (near Thongsala), Koh Phangan
Ao Bang Charu is well situated close to Thong Sala and on the main road to Had Rin. Its proximity to town and open sandy beach has made it a popular destination in Koh Pha Ngan for over twenty years. It is a peaceful beach with sunset views over Koh Samui; well away from the main road and big enough to really get away from it all. A river where crocodiles once lived enters the beach between First Villa and Chokana resorts; and from the river up towards the town, the sand is plentiful and the beach wide. Palm trees from the coconut plantations fringe the coastline making it the kind of place Desert Island dreams are made of.

    Bottle Beach
Haad Khuat is better known as Bottle Beach, one of the island most well-known beaches in Koh Phangan. The beach's inaccessibility has meant that you tend to get visitors staying on for more than a week or so as it is usually only reached by taxi boat from Ao Chaloklum Bay, and if the weather comes in, you can get stranded here for a day or two as the boats can only navigate the seas here when they are calm. There is about two kilometre mountain path from Had Khom that can be negotiated on foot, and some nutters have been said to have made it over on dirtbikes, though it is not advisable with very steep trails and boulders that can rip a hole in the chunkiest tyre, leaving you with a long walk back to civilisation with a hefty bike. Caution should also be taken when travelling this path on foot in wet weather.

The sea conditions change as you move further round towards the East coast of Koh Phangan and do not favour coral, thus the sea shelf starts to fall away quite steeply, making it possible to swim here all year round. Bottle Beach and Thong Nai Pan are favourites for low season visitors who want to swim, but don't mind missing out on the coral. It is also considered one of the most beautiful beaches on the island due to its wide golden beach, the lush natural cove and the high mountains that surround it. Due to its Northerly location, neither sunset nor sunrise can be seen from this beach. This beach is perfect for people who want to get away from it all.

    Impressions From The Area

    Chaloklum Bay
Chaloklum is Koh Phangan's second port and also a major fishing village. Despite it having a selection of budget and midrange accommodations, Chaloklum has not been influenced by the influx of tourists in the same manner as other parts of the island and the village maintains a very authentic, almost charming, Thai atmosphere.

The central part of the bay is dominated by a couple of piers, stacks of fishing boats and that authentic fishy sea smell you either love or hate. Due to the fishing boats, the water around the central area gets a bit murky and it's not great for swimming. Head to either the east or west extreme for much better beaches and water conditions. The western beach is peaceful and quite lovely with plenty of tree cover bordering the sandy beach, and an offshore breakwater provides a good deal of shelter. To the east, the beach is even better, and here you will find the majority of Chaloklum's guesthouses and beach bungalows.

The town has a handful of very good Thai seafood restaurants, so if you stay in the area, be sure to wander into town at least once. There isn't much night life to speak of - the bars are primarily small and simple, frequented mostly by locals and fishermen, but several of the bungalow operations provide good drinks in a relaxed atmosphere right on the beach. The Chinese temple just to the south of the village, on the road to Thong Sala is worth checking out as well, with its colourful Chinese architecture and several beautiful Buddha images.

    Haad Khom Beach
Haad Khom is a top spot if you'd like to stay away from the hordes but still be on a lovely beach. Although quite small, the beach here is beautiful with plentiful shade, squeaky white sand and crystal clear water.

The range of guesthouses is good, with options for most budgets and there's also a couple of great eateries.

Although the beach isn't as beautiful or good for swimming as Bottle Beach, Haad Khom has a much more chilled-out vibe these days, and locals often boast it's the best place for snorkelling on Ko Pha Ngan.

    Haad Sadet Beach
The beach at the estuary of Koh Phangan's greatest waterfall and neighbouring the island's only National Park; a tropical wonderland of bohemian bungalows and chilled island vibes. This beach is located next to the famous Than Sadet Waterfall in Koh Phangan, visited many times by Thai royalty. Except from the sea access, one can reach Haad Sadet using the main road from Ao Thong Nai Pan. It looks beautiful, serene and unbelievably untouched, despite of a couple of bars and restaurants located on the beach. Here the famous Than Sadet River meanders down the mountainside though the dense jungle and exits into the sea. White sand and crystal clear blue water make this a perfect place to relax far from the crowd. The neighboring smaller beach of Thong Reng boasts clear waters and a unique rustic feel of the old Koh Phangan.

It is a fairly small beach at the bottom of the river valley flanked by steep green hills. The sand is white and huge boulders crown the peninsulas that surround the cove.

The sea is deep enough for year round swimming, thought the waves can be rough. The southern peninsula splits the two beaches of Haad Sadet and Haad Thong Reng where Thaan Sadet river meets the sea.

    Haad Son Beach
From the main port town of Thong Sala, about a 10 minute drive along the west coast of Koh Phangan just past Laem Son Lake you will arrive at the wonderful beach of Haad Son. Haad Son is a smaller more contained area that is ideal for snorkeling. The coral reef that stretches along the beach sustains an abundance of corals and marine life. The low-key atmosphere is perfect for relaxing and enjoying the clear blue-green water.

This very laid back beach attracts many families as the beach is perfect for young children. Even during the low season the beaches are still excellent for swimming.

Had Son is a privately owned beach and was previously inhabited by just one family, thus it is one of the region's most undeveloped and secluded bays. The shoreline is approximately 600 metres long and there is very little on it except for tall shady coconut palms and acres of white sand. With just one resort Had Son beach provides the perfect getaway for those seeking idyllic island life.

It is fairly shallow before the coral reef, thus swimming conditions are affected by the tides, with the highest tidal season from November to April is best for swimming.

    Impressions from Haad Son Beach

    Sri Thanu Beach
Sri Thanu Bay offers a chance to see Koh Phangan as it once was. Being the hub for tin mining before the island turned to tourism there is interesting spots to visit including Laem Son Lake.

There is a also a number of small fishing vessels catching squid from the beach and the are lots of small eateries, food stalls and excellent restaurants in the area.

The village of Baan Sri Thanu is a quiet little town that maintains a more Thai feel than other more developed areas on Koh Phangan but offers a good selection of shops and restaurants and more services than many lower key spots.

Half of the beach here has been developed into a small anchorage for the local fishing fleet, which has had a detrimental effect on the beach and the water quality toward the middle and southern end of the beach. A good deal of noise can be expected as boats come and go, but this is luckily not an all day phenomenon. Despite this, the northern end still has reasonable swimming and sunbathing, and a nearby coral reef is a convenient spot to do some snorkelling. Much of this wide sandy beach is unshaded, so pack plenty of sunblock and a hat.

The northern end of the bay is more popular with a good mix of budget accommodations, some of which are divided by an often nasty river as you get further toward the middle of the beach. At the southern end of the bay there is a small cluster of places, some on the bay shore but mostly up on the headland. This southern area is quieter and more low key, and while the views are quite nice, the beach is not.

    Haad Thian Beach
Koh Phangan's Haad Tian (west) is located on the western shore near the secluded Haad Kruad beach and the popular Haad Yao (west) beach. You can reach the pristine shores of Koh Phangan's Haad Tian by concrete and dirt roads from Chaloklum and Thong Sala. Haad Tian is a small secluded beach with only one resort. Here the sand is courser mixed with coral deposits. It is fairly close to the reef, but is shallow before it thus swimming conditions are best in high tidal season unless you venture over the reef.

If you are a diver or love to snorkel, you will be happy to hear that Koh Phangan's Haad Tian has a wondrous coral reef just offshore that is sure to dazzle even the most discerning underwater aficionado. However because Haad Tian has a shallow seabed, the best times for swimming are between the months of November and April. If you plan to splash about in the remaining months, you should schedule your swims at Haad Tian to coincide with the high tides. If you intend to stretch out to relax upon the beach so that you can enjoy your favorite pastime, you should bring a padded blanket to Haad Tian. Koh Phangan's Haad Tian has coarse sand and coral deposits that make up its landscape. If you want to wander, you can head inland from Haad Tian and take in the natural splendor of the indigenous flora and fauna that exists at the sides of the road, or you can walk over to one of the two surrounding beaches. In any case, don't forget to bring your camera to Haad Tian.

So if you are on the island, celebrating the fact that you managed to getaway to this island paradise, you should definitely complete your trip by visiting Koh Phangan's Haad Tian (west)!

    Haad Yuan Beach
There's no doubt that Haad Yuan is an extraordinary beach. It provides a unique ambience of remote beach and reminded the "old good Koh Phangan". Haad Yuan lies on the peaceful southeastern coast of Koh Phangan. Located only three kilometres south of Haad Yao (east) and five kilometres from Haad Rin on the mountain path. it provides a unique ambience of remote beach.

On the east of Koh Phangan, It is one of three small, white sand beaches that are grouped together on this stretch of the east coast, the others being Haad Tian and Haad Wai Nam, about half a kilometre from each other. All three have long been home to escapees from Haad Rin, and have a real old school Phangan vibe going on. There is a decent drop off and the absence of a coral reef allows for year round swimming in these secluded bays.

You will see the crystal blue sea at the front and the rush tropical forest climbing up along the mountain at the back. That makes it ideal for watching the sunrise and the moon on full moon night. It is also a great place for sunbathing and swimming.

Access is only possible by boat; or for experienced walkers, there's the mountain path. The weather can get a bit rough on the east coast, so be careful not to get stranded if boats cannot run.

    Mae Haad Beach
Mae Haad is one of the best coastal snorkeling sites on Koh Phangan. It is located about 3 km from Chaloklum on the west coast corner of Koh Phangan, this is a very pretty beach with a spit running out to Koh Ma, a small islet that lies just offshore. Though crossing conditions are best at low tide, the crossing can be made through shallow water when the tide comes back in. The sandbar separates the beach into two distinct area, the eastern end is shorter and largely unused by tourists. It gets muddy at low tide and local fishermen claim this area with their crab pots and longtail boats. The beach to the west of the spit is much longer and more beautiful, and this is where everyone flocks to find the best sunbathing spot.

The snorkelling and swimming to the west of the islet are also outstanding. Mae Haad's beach consists mostly of soft white sand that extends out into the sea. The water is quite shallow and there is a good deal of coral just off the beach, so water activities are best done during high tide, but beyond the reef, a dropoff makes for some excellent swimming no matter what the tidal conditions. There is a clear channel however, that grants relatively coral-free access to greater depths toward the centre of the beach marked by a signpost. This is a very popular area attracting a loyal repeat crowd, particularly Europeans.

Occasional loud techno parties pump till dawn here, so head to another beach for the evening if this isn't your cup of tea or invest in earplugs if you want a good night's sleep. However, most of the time, Mae Haad remains a fairly quiet and peaceful stretch of beach. The accommodations here are primarily inexpensive and basic.

If you're after a break from the beach, the Wang Sai waterfall is a short walk away, and has a lovely little pool for swimming, though the water can be cloudy with silt in the rainier seasons, so don't dive right in if you can't see the rocky bottom.

    Thansadet Beach
The beach at the estuary of Koh Phangan's greatest waterfall and neighbouring the island's only National Park; a tropical wonderland of bohemian bungalows and chilled island vibes. This beach is located next to the famous Than Sadet Waterfall in Koh Phangan, visited many times by Thai royalty. Except from the sea access, one can reach Haad Sadet using the main road from Ao Thong Nai Pan. Thongsala
The main town on Koh Phangan, most people will just pass through Thong Sala on the way to one of Koh Phangan's many beaches. It's packed with the standard port town stuff - travel agents, tourist shops, restaurants and bars suitable for an hour or so while you wait for a ferry, banks and exchange facilities, internet cafes and medical clinics.

If you're staying close by or need to kill a few hours while waiting for a boat there are a few things to keep you busy - including a newly opened cinema, a gym where you can get Thai boxing lessons, and a paintball battlefield.

With all of the reasons why you may find yourself in Thong Sala, there are very few (if any) reasons why you would choose to stay in Thong Sala. Accommodation options in the town's centre consist mainly of large impersonal hotels and a couple of laid back guest houses. Even if you have an early ferry departure, the resorts on the closest beaches are a better value than the places in town and are still within reach of the pier and Thong Sala's many services.

The town has everything visitors could possibly need. Several banks, ATMs and money exchange kiosks are located a short walk from the pier, as are a countless array of travel agents, markets, pharmacies, internet cafes and some decent shopping. Most places also offer motorbike and jeep rentals.
